Motorcyclist caught doing triple the speed limit, Lytton

On June 3 at 1.16pm, police from the Road Policing Command (RPC) were performing laser speed detection on Pritchard Road, Lytton.

Senior Constable John Bannister from RPC said he heard a motorcycle under heavy acceleration coming towards him and he observed the driver come over the top of an overpass bridge doing triple the speed limit.

“I targeted the motorcycle with my laser speed measurement device and checked it at 180km/hr in a 60km/hr zone,” Senior Constable Bannister said.

“That’s triple the legal speed limit and was placing all road users at serious risk.”

As a result, a 45-year-old Coorparoo man was fined $1,218, lost eight demerit points as well as a six month licence suspension for speeding and fined $417 for failing to attach his number plate in accordance with regulation.

Police want to remind drivers on the fatal five factors, especially leading up to the June/July school holidays when there is an increase in vehicles on Queensland roads:

  • Speeding;
  • Drink/drug driving;
  • Seat belts;
  • Fatigue; and
  • Distraction

At the launch of Operation Cold Snap which is a state-wide policing operation on Wednesday, Assistant Commissioner Mike Keating said that drivers who fail to comply with traffic laws and regulations place all road users across Queensland at a high risk of being involved in a serious or fatal traffic crash.

“Research supports the fact that the fatal five are contributing factors in reducing the amount of fatal and injury traffic crashes,” Assistant Commissioner Keating said.

“Between June 29 and July 19, anyone travelling on the state’s highways can expect to encounter police.”
